San Francisco’s 12.7 acre Alamo Square is one of the city’s top tourist spots (right up there with The Golden Gate Bridge). During our recent trip to Northern California, we enjoyed a short stop at dog-friendly San Francisco’s Alamo Square Park, a must-visit spot with the iconic Painted Ladies as its breathtaking backdrop.

Exploring Dog-Friendly Alamo Square Park
Location of Alamo Square Park
Alamo Square Park is at the intersection of Hayes Street and Steiner Street in San Francisco, CA.
We went to Alamo Square Park around 10:45 AM on a Saturday. Since the park is a favorite among residents and tourists, finding parking can be challenging. After driving around for 15 minutes, we got lucky and found a great spot conveniently located near the park.
Where does the name ‘Alamo Square Park’ come from?
It is believed that the name ‘Alamo’ most likely derives from the presence of poplar trees in the area and ‘álamo’ is the Spanish term for poplar.
In addition, yes, San Francisco’s Alamo Square Park is a square-shaped public space, bounded by four streets – Hayes, Steiner, Fulton, and Scott.
What is Alamo Square Park famous for?
Alamo Square Park is a top spot for photographers visiting San Francisco. Why? Its eastern edge provides a perfect view of the famous ‘Painted Ladies.’ These seven colorful Victorian homes, located at 710–720 Steiner Street, are also called ‘Postcard Row’ or the ‘Seven Sisters.’ These were built in the late 1800s and are some of the city’s most iconic and frequently photographed residences.

Dog-Friendly Alamo Square Park
Alamo Square Park is a popular spot among dog owners. There are two dog-designated areas:
1) At the eastern side of the park, dogs must be on a leash.
2) The western side of the park features a dog play area where dogs can run off-leash (take note- this area is not enclosed).
Also, during our walk, we noticed that there are numerous poop bag stations, trash bins, and thoughtfully installed water fountains specifically designed for dogs throughout the park.
We were surprised to see so many dogs off-leash when we visited, even at the Painted Ladies side of the park. But they were all really well-behaved and stayed near their owners. The off-leash area isn’t fenced in, but all the dogs were playing great together like they were old friends. It was a Saturday morning too, and lots of locals were out with their dogs.
We had a very pleasant walk on a cool, cloudy mid-morning. The park was clean and well-kept, and we were pleased to see numerous volunteers cleaning up and planting flowers.
